The Raptor King by Uranus-seventhsun The Raptor King by Uranus-seventhsun
Latest character inspired by my trip to Jordan. I have his story, just need to write it. :D
:bulletblue: :bulletblue: :bulletblue::bulletblue:

So called because he's one of the sixty-odd people on his planet who can ride the man-eating raptor (bird) and not get killed.

Every morning he's in the raptor conservatory overlooking the desert mountains. There he feeds the birds, cleans their cages, checks their injuries. Eagles, buzzards, falcons, hawks, owls and man-eating raptors; they are managed by the Raptor Director who must also be a Rider. The king is a nuisance however; he tends to take off and land from the conservatory. Never mind it's a good hike from the palace.

Once monarch of a small desert kingdom, he first attacked neighbouring city-states and then annexed the entire planet. He let people believe it's a grab for power. However, he awaits the sky-people, certain they would bring false promises and pestilence.

:bulletblue: :bulletblue: :bulletblue::bulletblue:

Used David Gandy pinterest.com/pin/137148751123… as ref; I stumbled on him by accident. He had the beaky nose, the sloping forehead, the widow's peak, beard and curly hair I was looking for. However, King Lucien always wears his hair long, never wears a cardigan, :la: and his eyes are brown, not blue.

The background took me awhile to figure out. Didn't want a cliched pic with a raptor over his shoulder or anything like that. Besides, he's smack bang in the middle of the pic, something I never do unless it's a sketch. Well, this is in my sketchbook... :)

He's a handsome bloke, I'll give him that. =)

Is your man-eating raptor an original creature or is it a roc? Either way, the story sounds pretty cool.

 There are several species, raging from the roc to the Haast Eagle. Riders can ride them all, except the griffin. Riding a griffin means you trust it, which gives it access to your loved ones and community. Since griffins are telepathic, a gullible person could get a whole lot of people killed.  Griffins target Riders in particular, since Riders are the only people that can kill or control them, to the extent ordinary people don't even know they exist. Only when there's a purge do the Riders allow the griffins to kill at will.

I gotta get the story written. It's listening to the buzzards in the desert that got the whole idea started.

I'll have to keep an eye out for when the story is available then. It sounds rather interesting! And I'm a sucker for griffins anyway.

Thank you.  I've no idea how to proceed in publishing since connections are everything and I don't want to end up in the slush pile.

Aye, I do. Especially that second one. :)

Publishing looks really confusing to me too. Some love to self-publish through Lulu, Amazon, and whatnot, some say that gets them blacklisted with the big publishers, some strike an awesome deal with a company and have no scary tales to tell of the publishing world, some always get rejected while less interesting stuff seems to always get approved, and then oddballs that end up in magazines and stuff with a little comfortable fame. Would some site like LinkedIn be a good starting place for connections? I don't know of any good writer's forums or groups that have some old pros to give industry tips, but I assume there should be at least one or two out there. I never did find one for fine pencil art (my passion) and the most I was able to do was find the website of a few professionals I adore and chat with them on occasion. Very bashfully, I might add, because I idolized them. =P

I'm on Linkedin, but it's just as annoying as FB.  I'd been on a few writing sites, but they seem to favor short stories, not novels. There used to be Miss Snark, an agent who'd give the lowdown on wannabee novelists, writing and the publishing world but alas, she stopped blogging years ago.

No way I wanna self-publish. I suck at networking and marketing. I'd rather someone do all that for me. I for one would never want to do reading. I sound like a Cyberman when I read.

Yeah, it gets awkward when you idolise someone. Worse thing is coming off as stupid cos you'd be wasting their time.

Networking and marketing is such a nightmare. I can't say I'm particularly fond of it either. I worked a semi-HR department job once at a printing compnay that was always needing to hire salesmen, and it's a good thing I was in charge of making the resumes compatible with our printer and wasn't in charge of screening the applications for the boss. I'd kicked nearly every single one of them out. "That one's an egotistical loon, you don't want him." But to some degree you have to be an egotistical loon to be a successful sales rep. =P

Graphite work can hurt your hands. Maybe not now, but eventually. I stopped it by holding a bag of frozen anything when I was done. It works.
The pressure you need for the different leads, well, ouch. I just read an article about it, it's on my mind.
That's a lot of hrs.

He doesn't mind most of the time. You have sex, you lose the memories. Losing the ancestor memories in a moment of pleasure ain't worth it.  However, he must have sex before he gets too old, or the memories would kill him. In his late 30s, he's approaching that point. The longer you have the memories, the further back you can go, the more powerful you become, hence the more likely they would kill you when you do have sex.

I can imagine, writing a novel takes an extreme amount of time. So much planning and matching parts together to make sure it all makes sense. My fiance is a writer so i know how that goes.
I could never do it i don't think ! I have plenty of ideas but organizing all of them so much really sounds so difficult!

It is indeed, with all the drafts you have to do, and I mean, there's always something you need to fix!  Does he do that for a living, or does he have a daytime job?

Well, I mean, there's a whole lot of beautiful people it's really harder to not be beautiful if you are healthy and well-groomed. And this guy has excellent carriage so it's like... you know? He's not really *pretty* in a soft or delicate or refined way if you know what I mean, but he's attractive and someone I want to look at. :)

Haha I don't see what that's got to do with anything. Carriage is about how you hold your torso especially, and secondarily how you walk; you could be only a foot tall and still have excellent carriage! :)

One of Lucien's nicknames was "Shorty" as a kid; he got his ass kicked every day. Nobody had any idea he'd become king, including him. Once on the throne, his advisors drummed into him the importance of carriage and grooming. He was a a bit of a wildling before that. :D

Good on ya friend. :la:

I think you've done an excellent job with capturing the human form here, and the shading is excellent. And an interesting backstory as well. In all, the character really feels, well, real. Great job, and keep up the good work! :)
